Spatiotemporal analytics for regional low-carbon development: linking LCA and GIS to assess GHG from cocoa farming and deforestation in Peru

Speaker: Giancarlo Raschio, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Understanding the temporal variations of greenhouse gasses (GHG) emissions at local level is important for companies in the agri-food sector working to incorporate sustainable practices in their supply chains. In the same way, local governments following a low-carbon development pathway require robust methodologies not only to estimate GHG amounts but also their concentration areas and dynamics. Factors such as GHG from farming practices, specific transportation distance and deforestation at farm level require explicit spatial and temporal analysis.
Incorporating spatial and temporal analytics into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can be achieved by joining it with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and by applying spatial statistic tools. In this presentation we will explore how coupling LCA and GIS can help understanding spatial and temporal distribution of GHG emission from cocoa farming and its associated deforestation.

Giancarlo is an International Climate Protection Fellow for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation conducting research in Germany at the bioeconomy department of the German Institute for Food Technologies (DIL e.V). Giancarlo’s research focus on two topics: 1) how spatial and temporal analytics can improve Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to be used as a decision making tool, and 2) the role of the private sector to drive sustainable development in supply chains.

Giancarlo has five years of experience working as the Director of the Carbon and Forest Program at Ecosystem Services LLC (ESLLC), a US-based company with operations in Peru and Brazil working on climate change mitigation, ecosystem services management, and environmental impact assessment studies. At ESLLC Giancarlo developed, validated, and verified two REDD+ projects (VCS and CCB Gold) in Brazil; in cooperation with The Smithsonian Institute he led a participatory assessment of ecosystem services and drivers of change in the Madre de Dios region of Peru.

As an independent consultant Giancarlo has worked with organizations such as the Mission of Peru at the United Nations, WWF-Peru, IDH The Sustainable Trade, Oriental Consultants Co, and Tetra-Tech ARD in projects related to forest conservation, ecosystem services management, REDD+, and the role of the private sector in achieving ecosystem conservation and sustainable development.

Giancarlo holds a Master on Environmental Management from Yale, a M.Sc on Environmental Management and a B.Sc. on Environmental Engineering from UNALM university in Peru.
